First, THE GOOD The pastry chef here? God. Absolutely a spiritual experience to eat the bread and pastries on offer. I have nothing but praise for their tarts and focaccia...they're heavenly. Also, the menu always features vegetarian options that I can trust are actually prepared vegetarian, i.e. no chicken broth slipped in, no lard where I'm not expecting it. Then, THE BAD Since I first started coming to The Winds about 5 years ago, the vegetarian entrees have become increasingly sparse. The Winds used to be entirely vegetarian, so I'm not exactly sure how they have let that part of their ethos fade a little. I know that this is not an issue that affects the majority of people, but in a restaurant that prides itself on being acceptable to this type of eater I think its something that merits attention. The Prixe Fixe is NEVER vegetarian, and I'm a young post-grad so this is a big detraction for me. And Last, THE UGLY This restaurant has service that is rude to young people. My boyfriend and I save up to eat here, and although we look young we come prepared to order appetizers, wine, full entrees and dessert with drinks. I guess I would understand if we split everything between us or didn't order wine with dinner (maybe), but that is simply not the case. We come, prepared to spend money, and the waiters will overtly snub us with rude and slow service. This is unacceptable. I have complained to management in the past and they have said they intend to speak to them about it. I guess it didn't work. Additionally, sometimes even if you make a reservation there is still a wait to be seated on a busy night. I haven't come for dinner in a while out of fear of this situation (once I made a reservation and had to wait 30 minutes for the table anyway) so maybe they've ironed out this problem. My parents still won't eat here due to this problem. Overall: The best food in the area...with some service issues.

Love the Winds and highly recommend to anyone who appreciates great organic locally grown cuisine.

My wife and I have been going to the Winds for the past 20 years. I can recall when there were 5 or 6 items on the menu and they rotated new one's in every month. It was kinda cool. The entrees were unique, good portions, and well presented. You felt like you were doing something very special. In the past couple of years, the quality of the entrees has gone down hill and the experience is more hum-drum. One consistent positive is that the servers are usually excellent. Last night, my wife and I ordered one entree and told the server we wanted to share it. She brought it out to us already split into 2 portions on 2 separate plates. How great that was! She also knew the wines very well and helped us choose one that was perfect with the meal. We left her a big tip. Other than that, not that exciting. It still a good place to go, but not the "5 star" restaurant it used to be.

We were going to Yellow Springs for my husband's birthday. A friend suggested we try Winds...I am so glad we did! They had a wonderful wine selection. The menu was small, but every bite was delicious. The atmosphere was fun and lively, and our server was well-informed. We will be going there again!

First let me apologize that this review will not contain a lot of specifics. Suffice it it to say though this was an amazing feast. My wife and I started with corn fritters that were to die for. My wife had the traditional caesar salad and I had the seasonal Leo salad with peaches and basil dressing that was amazing. Next I had the ribeye and my wife had the pork chop with corn risotto - we were both singing in our seat. To top it off I had the blueberry pie and my wife had the "Ho-Ho" cake desert that just floored us with bursts of flavors. In summary, we had a five star meal with a bottle of wine under $120 - crazy! Did I mention our server Jamie was first class? This is leisure dining at its finest.

Really great food, I had the organic sandwich which was the best veggie sandwich I ever tasted. The bread basket was also very good. I wanted everything on the menu. I will return soon.

Let me start by saying that The Winds has been one of my favorite restaurants for years! I have always looked forward to going here, the food has always been fantastic, great service, warm and cozy....well this was not my experience this past week. It felt like they have lost track of what a really good restaurant is all about... great food and service and atmosphere at a reasonable price. My reservation was for 6:30.... at 5:30 I called to see if I could change it to 6PM. They told me I could change it to 6:15. Ok no problem, but when I got there at 6:00... another couple who walked in after me said they had reservations for 6:15 and were early - could they be seated... the host said " sure follow me"....... wow - they couldnt change my reservation from 6:30 to 6:00 (only 1/2 tables full at 6:00 when I got there) but they could accomodate this couple. They also accomodated a walk in at 6:05pm by seating them immediately. Bartender had a slight attitude when a group wanted to move their tab from bar to a table... he also was not very friendly in general... ( not a large bar area - so he wasnt overworked) Food was a fabulous as ever, howeve, menu selection was noticebly smaller than usual and noticeably pricier than usual.... entres were 25 - 30 ( 6 scallops for 25 - seriously?) Bottom line - I think The Winds has gotten a little too big for it's britches!

The Winds is one of my favorite places to eat, ever. In fact, I think so much of it that I had my wedding rehearsal dinner here. The vibe is relaxed elegant. You can come here in jeans and tee-shirts fresh off a hike in the Glen, or you can dress up and have a romantic, intimate dinner. The food is always good. The menu rotates based off of what's seasonally and locally available. The prices are fair for the quality of the food you get. The wine selection is great too (There is a wine shop connected to the restaurant). Even the lunch is reaaally good (try a burger - it'll be the best you've had).

My boyfriend took me to the Winds Cafe for my birthday dinner. We drove up from Columbus, where we have plenty of good eats to choose from---but the Winds was WELL WORTH the drive. The server brought out a basket of delicious bread with herbed butter and an olive plate. I could have had that alone for my meal, so I was highly anticipating what would come next! While the entrees sounded and looked amazing, we opted to order 4 small plates so that we could give everything a try. We ordered the special Mexican style meatballs, made of pork with a kick-ass tomatillo sauce. They were served with tortillas, which were perfect for scooping up the sauce left behind. We also got the Stuffed Calamari, Winds Shrimp Cocktail and the Savory Moroccan Lamb Pastries. All 4 plates were cleaned by us, but I think we both agreed that the meatballs were our favorite. It was my birthday, so we HAD to get dessert. We split the Vanilla Bean Panna Cotta. It was very light---and the perfect amount of sweet. It was served with fresh strawberries. We split this, but I definitely could have eaten my own! We talked on the way home about how great the dinner was. And while Yellowsprings is about 1 hour from our Columbus home, it's WELL WORTH the drive for a great dinner. I am looking forward to heading back to the Winds, but this time--I want to hit up their brunch menu.

I think the food is good and so is the table service. However, my wife and I waited for a hour for our table. We had two small children with us. Not ideal to say the least. We had a reservation at 11:15am and were not seated until 12:15pm. There was not a real leader taking charge and communication was a nightmare. Overall, our experience was a real shame because the food was overshadowed by the experience.

After a long bike ride, we were ready to seriously chow down. Had a drink at the bar and received great service, though the Aperol spritz was a little too sweet. I'd recommend a drier wine than prosecco. Dinner was quite good. We were happy to be greeted with a delicious bread basket with a great selection of breads. Ordered several small plates: figs, beet salad, and bruschetta. While all were tasty, the beets could've been more plentiful. The bruschetta was simple, but a stand-out with perfect heirloom tomatoes, lightly grilled bread, and an unexpected bit of citrus (lime) to liven it up. The ratatouille crepes were a treat. But the scallop entree, a special, was a bit of a disappointment. I liked the idea of cucumber infused rice, but it needed more depth. And for some reason, they split the scallops in half before cooking?!? They weren't to the point of being outright rubbery, but they lost a lot of the tenderness that is the mark of great scallop preparation. We enjoyed a fabulous bottle of Chablis, reasonably priced, and a terrific peach and blackberry pie a la mode. The boy said the cappucino was great, but my coffee was a bit sharp, even with milk. All in all a very good experience and a great way to recharge after a ride.

I've always heard great things about the Winds Cafe but just never found myself in Yellow Springs too often. Well after trying it for the first time a few weeks ago, I have to say that a trip out to Yellow Springs needs to happen a little more frequently. My girlfriend and I went on a Friday night at around 6pm and were seated immediately. We decided to order 2 small plates and a large plate of Roasted Trout and share them between the both of us. I think the next time we go, we'll be ordering 2 large plates because the small plates were not worth it. For $11 we ordered Seared Sea Scallops however there were only 4 little scallops with some garnish to decorate it. Don't get me wrong, they were good, but for that price, you would have hoped for something more filling. However, the Roasted Trout that we ordered was totally worth it. A whole trout cooked perfectly with crab meat on top. It was excellent and I would highly recommend trying it out. Along with a couple glasses of wine and an excellent bread basket, we had wonderful evening and will definitely make a return visit. Oh before I forget, they have Jeni's Ice Cream, which is by FAR the best ice cream that I've ever had. I was extremely excited that they had it on the menu and not surprised at all, as The Winds Cafe just seems like the place that would carry that kind of product.

When the winds is good it's very good, but when the winds is bad...it's horrid. The latter has been my experience lately. Reservations are excepted, but only honored sometimes and the food is hit or miss. Sometimes the service is excellent and sometimes you have a 15 year old waiter who is texting. I really do wish the winds was more consistant because I have had some very good experiences there in the past.

My wife and I have been patronizing the Winds since the late 1970s, and over the years we have had many, many great meals and memorable dining experiences. During the last couple of years it has been a disappointment to see that the staff training level has slipped , while the food remains at a high level of preparation and taste. We had dinner recently, and the server brought my wife's appetizer with her salad. My appetizer didn't appear at the same time ( my salad did) and suddenly the entree appeared. My appetizer was not on the server's radar, and since I had my entree I told her to forget the appetizer. No apology, and we were avoided thereafter. This is not the only instance of a server inadequacy we've had in the last six months, and while the Winds remains a favorite place, it has suffered a decline in service. We now often order our appetizer but not the entree, so we know we won't be rushed. Not all servers transgress , but it's a consideration. The Winds should not be like The Longhorn Steakhouse, but the service is sometimes equivalently low. We hope they turn things around, and that the younger staff members emulate some of the senior staffers.

We have been dining at the Winds for many years and must say last evening was a new low. The best way to describe our server was surly. No effort to describe a food item or pretend she enjoyed her job. The food was disappointing to say the least. The menu and the actual presentation just don't match. The salad is titled the Sexiest Salad in the World Version II. Menu states it contains arugula and basil. It would be safer if described as greens. Basil - no. Arugula - maybe a few leaves. And the amount of buffalo mozzarella - maybe 1 - 2 Tablespoons at the very most. Actually since it is listed under "Small Plates" the menu is correct. Very small. The bistro item of the week was roast pork. The meat was very dry - over cooked. The salad looked like a Dole mix. Dessert menu - needs a review. The secret to the Winds survival is it's location. Due to lack of competition it is able to fill the seats on a regular basis. After last evening however I would rather stay home and put a candle on the table and have a bowl of cereal than venture out to The Winds.

I love The Winds. It's cute and intimate and it has really good food. The first time we went I had risotto, and the bf had the fall-off-the-spoon duck--which was DELICIOUS. I never even knew I liked duck before I tasted his! Also, they serve a variety of olives as a free appetizer, which seals the deal for me. We also went on Valentine's day, and while the food was good, it wasn't as great as our first experience. I chalk it up to the fact that they were very busy that night. We will definitely go again, maybe on a night that isn't so busy. It's a great place to take a date, just make sure to have a reservation (and try that duck if it is on the menu!!)

I've lived in Dayton for about nine months now and am still in the process of sampling everything the area has to offer. That said, I've sampled quite a bit and this is my favorite restaurant so far. The atmosphere inside the restaurant was cozy yet sophisticated, and without being pretentious. Our waitress was first rate and friendly. The food was even better. I had a roasted duck breast that totally changed the way I look at duck meat. It was one of the most savory, well-cooked, well-seasoned pieces of meat I've ever had. Really, I can't say enough good things about this place. PRO TIP: Get a reservation as early as you can. My girlfriend and I wanted to go back a couple weeks ago and called on Thursday night to make a reservation for Friday or Saturday and the earliest thing they had available was Monday.

We went here with some friends for breakfast. Didn't have to wait very long (under 10 mins) on a Sunday morning. Very laid back feeling, and dress was come casual or dressed up. The staff was super friendly and helpful with the menu. The food selection was great, they let us split a order because it was so large. There was no feeling like they wanted us to rush to get more people in. Menu is a little pricey, but you are paying for what you get and the food is great and light for all types of diets.

We visited The Winds Café upon the recommendation of friends who'd been and the other guests at our B&B. We made a reservation a few weeks in advance (which was smart because they were already totally full by 6:30/7). Food: The food was good, but definitely not on par with similarly priced restaurants in Ohio. We started with the Caesar and the autumn equinox salads. Both were fine, but I tasted nothing unique about the Caesar preparation (as the menu claimed I would) and didn't think it was in any way, shape or form "the best Caesar around." The Autumn Equinox salad had some very good, fresh elements (pecans, apples and great spinach), but it was topped with a "cheddar mustard crouton" that was really just a large piece of toasted cheese bread. The mustard under the cheddar was very nice, but seemed very out of place on top of a salad. The oddest thing about this salad was that the same boring cheddar cheese also had a starring role as 30 or so little cubes of cheese studding the greens. It reminded me of a standard shredded cheese covered "house salad" that you might get at a typical Midwestern pizza place. The friend Spanish potatoes (with somewhat bland aioli) were delicious and a bargain at 5 dollars. The salmon was very well cooked. The basil oil and beet risotto that accompanied it LOOKED spectacular and tasted unremarkable. The Pat La Frieda strip steak with mushrooms was a bit overcooked. The mushrooms were delicious and the red wine reduction was unnoticeable. It was accompanied by some tender scalloped potatoes and standard grilled vegetables. The butterscotch pudding was very good. But nothing that I ate or drank was spectacular. Service: The service was generally good. We didn't wait long for drinks or water refills and servers were helpful when asked for recommendations. Wine list: Was limited, but their excellent sommelier and wine buyer at the attached wine shop offered some lovely wines at very reasonable prices. Overall: The atmosphere was nice - wood floors and white walls. Partial interior walls and windows provide some privacy in an otherwise open (and a little loud) dining room. They claim to have been called the best restaurant in Ohio, which is undeniably a stretch. I wouldn't argue with someone who claimed that The Winds is the best upscale dining experience in the very tiny town of Yellow Springs (though I've only eaten at a few places). But, for the price, I would suggest that you visit the Winds for a drink and appetizer (or spend it at the wind shop next door) and save your money for a night out at L'Antibes in Columbus or Lolita in Cleveland.

Reservations at 6:45 for table of 2 and was seated a little after 7, no biggie and the bar staff was friendly. However, once seated, it took almost 15 minutes for a waiter to finally arrive to take a drink order, by that time we ordered our apps and entrees with our drinks as we had ample time to make a selection. To the waiter's credit he did apologize. The halibut in tomato water was excellent as was the pork chop. The shaved potatoes app with aiioli was great as was the fresh salads, bread and butter, all extremely fresh and tasty. Don't forget the brownie sundae with raspberry gellato. Overall, the food was excellent but the service lacking.

If you plan a trip to yellow springs and eat then winds cafe is where to go. Yellow springs is like being in a cool chicago neighborhood without the constant car exhaust and hipsters with skinny jeans that go just below the knee. Here instead you can walk past Dave Chapelle, hippies, skateboarders, and old people. Just dont look into their eyes. The restaurant. The tables are not smashed together. so everyone doesnt get to here your conversation, just who you are with. thats a good thing. service was great. they have small plates and large plates. everything is made easy to share. This is probably the only destination restaurant in the Dayton area. A place to go, take your time, enjoy local, handmade, fresh food and forget about whereever you came from.

I haven't been back but I've bumped them up a star because after emailing them back in January about what wines we had at their wine tasting and thinking I'd never get a response, I finally did. Yes, it was months later, but it says something to me about a company that could have just said 'oh, its been too late. She's probably forgotten.' and instead follows through with a response and a apology for the delay. I still want to go back and have a proper dinner there and I've heard that their patio is wonderful! Thank goodness for this warmer weather!

The Winds is absolutely my favorite place to go when I go back home to Ohio, and I crave it on a regular basis. The food is one of a kind, fresh, and local, and the atmosphere is so cozy. My absolute go-to favorites on the menu are the Tuscan Bread Salad, the Brown Bag and the Black Bean Chili. My parents are both huge fans of the Squash and Pumpkin Lasagna, but it's a seasonal item, and I never seem to be home when it's on the menu! I'm positive I would love it. If you ever make it to Columbus, Cincinnati, or Dayton, OH, definitely take the extra time to drive to Yellow Springs. The Winds does not disappoint.

wish they had a better alcohol selection (need more beers!) but the food was very good. The idea that they change their menu every 2 months is very appealing too. It makes me want to go back every 2 months just to see whats going on

If you are in Dayton I would highly recommend a trip to Yellow Springs. If you are in the mood try to rent some bicycles and cycle your way around this town filled with artists and shops. And when you stomach starts its revolt head to Winds Cafe. On Saturday I highly recommend reservations. The food is highly seasonal and they change it based on what they get fresh. The best way is to get a buch a small plates. If you are a wine enthusiast this is perfect place to wind down. And for desset the chocolate cake looks decadent. I say that because by dinner date managed to wolf that down... Plus the staff is friendly.

My husband and I have only been to the Winds one time, but the food was DELICIOUS! I had the butternut squash ravioli and will never forget it. The food is very fresh, mostly local, and they use unique combinations of seasonings. The prices are high but in my opinion its worth it.

I really wanted to like this place but it just didn't stack up. We went on a busy night but had reservations so it shouldn't have been a problem. However the man acting as the host was also bussing tables. Once we checked in he forgot we were there and had reservations and seated folks who just walked in. We did get a really nice able at a window. Great for people watching in yellow springs! It took a while for our server to come over and a while for the drinks to get there. But now to the food... Bruschetta for an app--the bread was a little gummy and there wasn't a ton of flavor. But my entree, a ratatouille crepe, was quite lovely although I'm not sure it was worth the cost. My husband ordered the pork chops. They were set on top of some kind of corn stuff and covered with cherries. No veggies on the side and it looked bland to me, but he said it was really good. Even after all this i'd like to try this place again when they aren't so busy and maybe for lunch. Them maybe I'll change my rating.

I completely agree with the review posted by "a l.". The Winds has some amazing food and a good environment. The food is seasonal and local - all fresh. The time and care put into the menu is extraordinary and the wine list is extensive. This is all ruined by the fact that they are understaffed. On top of that, at times, they can have really unfriendly and unaccommodating staff. The wait, even with a reservation, always seems to be a bit obnoxious, which goes perfectly with the attitude of the host that is normally doing his best to avoid eye contact with you at all costs. Having lived in Europe, I actually think what they are trying to do is create a multi-course meal environment where you aren't rushed or constantly bothered by the staff. At first, I thought I would enjoy this restaurant for that exact purpose. However, they aren't on the mark and come across rude and unavailable to provide adequate service. This is not a big city restaurant - even if as another poster mentions "Yellow springs is like being in a cool Chicago neighborhood" - really, it is a small town in Ohio. I am just used to people being a bit more friendly.

I have wanted to eat at the Winds for a long time, and I finally got a chance to go for brunch today. The food was excellent, but I knew from past reviews that it would be. However, since the food was so good, I am terribly disappointed to say that the service was horrible. We were seated right away and brought two glasses of water, but after that it took nearly 15 minutes for a waiter to show up at our table. We placed our order right away, and then waited... and waited... and waited some more. After about 40 minutes, our waiter came by and said our ticket got lost and the kitchen was making our food right then. He offered us some free scones, then brought out just one for us to share. It was another 30 minutes before our food finally came out. During this time, no one even offered to refill out water glasses. Our waiter finally noticed that we needed water when he brought our food, but we were almost done with our meal by the time we actually got refills. I could see this kind of service being understandable if the restaurant was really busy or our waiter had a lot of tables, but there were plenty of empty tables in the dining room and our waiter appeared to only be serving a couple other tables. Those tables were all seated after us and served prior too! I'm sure I will give this place a second chance because the food was so wonderful, but I hope our horrible service was just a fluke.

I've eaten here twice. Once for dinner and the other for breakfast. Dinner was great. It was a chicken and pomegranate type dish and it was really, really good. No complaints but at $20 a plate, I guess there better not be! Breakfast was a whole other experience. Service was REALLY slow and the server wasn't very friendly at all and I couldn't help but feel like she rather not wait on our party. I was not impressed with the brunch. The eggs were okay--nothing special but the potatoes (usually my favorite thing at breakfast to eat) were ruined! There was fennel all over them and I hate fennel! The description only indicated "spices," so I wish they would have been a little more specific. I would like to go back though, and try out lunch!

What can you say that hasn't already been said about The Winds. Surely on of the top restaurants in the Dayton area if not "the" top restaurant. Fresh, organic food, prepared with flair. If I could complain about one thing it would be their beer selection. Don't get me wrong, there are usually a few top notch beers available (thank god they brought back Saison Dupont after a long absence). But this excellent restaurant has yet to recognize that beer can stand right along side wine when it comes to food and deserves equal respect. Serving an excellent, strong, dark beer in a chilled glass shows that they just don't quite get it. But I will not let that take away a star since the food is what it's all about here.

We just moved to the Dayton area, and this is the best place we have eaten so far. We've been pretty unimpressed with the food options in Dayton, but The Winds was worth the drive out to Yellow Springs! I had the Greek Lamb Burger, and it was one of the best all-around burgers (of any type) that I have ever had. Friendly service, great food (and inventive salads), and even a monthly wine pairing dinner. Definitely go check this place out!

The Winds is still my favorite restaurant when visiting Ohio. It's an oasis among the Buckeye State, a center of fresh local produce and organic ingredients. If you are looking for one of the best restaurants in the Dayton area and don't care if it's organic or pesticide-laden... you just want a great meal... well, you will find that the Winds is an excellent choice. The menu is hit or miss, but that is because it changes every month to use seasonal ingredients. In the summer, order the soft shell crabs... wow, they are to die for. Fresh and flown in frequently, they are panko fried to perfection. As far as the service, Howard (the aforementioned man with pony tale and beard) is the best server in the place. He has great recommendations and is very friendly and helpful. Consider yourself fortunate if he is taking care of you. Overall, the Winds is one of my faves. If I was just reviewing restaurants in Ohio, this would be 5 stars all the way.

I recently offered to buy my brother dinner in Dayton as a birthday present. He responded with a scoff/snarl (scarl?): in Dayton?? psh. No thanks! Maaaaaaybe the Winds.... So that's a compliment. I've eaten here a number of times, and the food has always been pretty good. Not NYC great but it's probably the closest to eating in NYC you'll find out in this corner of Ohio....The scones they serve at brunch are esp tasty.

The Winds Cafe. I had heard they had good food, but had not heard all the hype about this place until after I ate there. I actually ended up stumbling in there after hiking in the Glenn all day. I went with 2 friends, and we all were enjoying our food, until....I find a big black gnarly hair under my NY strip. I politely informed our server, and she seemed to care less, and evidently she didn't care, because she never came back, except to drop off the bill. I am expected to pay $34 for a steak that I can't eat? If you think you'd like to eat here, don't.

I eat here frequently and cannot say enough great things about it. Such a knowledgeable staff in regard to wine/meal pairings. The food is incredible and the atmosphere is quaint and reminds me of restaurants I have frequented in Soho. Hands down, this is one of the shining stars in Ohio. My friend and I always have our birthday lunches here and then spend the day shopping in Yellow Springs. This is a must-try if you are going to be in Ohio. I love all of their salads and the seasonal dishes are never a disappointment.

Whenever we go to Yellow Springs we try to make time for a meal at The Winds. This was our first time visiting for dinner with the entire family in tow. Boys 12, 10, 7. The kids options & menu were nice and healthy (each meal included a fresh, sliced peach!). Oldest boy and Mom split some small plates & salad. Figs, Pigs and Goats plate was a hit as were the Corn Fritters! Dad went with Sunrise Salad & Swordfish. Swordfish was juicy and light ... a great preparation! Our server made sure that both adults and kids needs were met or exceeded!

We drove to Winds Cafe from Dayton the Friday after Christmas for lunch. It was well worth the drive and the best meal out we had in Ohio. We had the Bistro Steak with garlicky flavored butter sauce, which came with a delicious greens salad, potato fries/chip strips, and the Provencal Omelette made with trout and boursin that also came with a nice salad. We had the Locations red wine (delicious) and the Handley Chardonnay to accompany, and took the delicious, light, almost fluffy lemon cheesecake and coffee on the way out. It was a really delicious meal and only $52 total, which is a steal by northern california standards for this quality of food. The only suggestion I would make would be to make the potatoes actual frites (shoe-string fries) - I prefer that to the longer, flat crispy fries. Service was excellent. The decor inside is wonderful: cozy, warm, private and you can have a quiet conversation. Part of the appeal of this place is that it's an entire experience to come here. This restaurant has been around for decades and it's great to see that they've kept up their standards in order to have this kind of longevity, something quite rare with restaurants. Many best wishes to restaurant owners, chefs and staff - keep up the good work!

a restaurant like this shouldn't be in the middle of Ohio. people who complain about paying $22 for an entree and still being hungry afterwards should hit up the local Golden Corral instead. i can see why Winds Cafe IS in the middle of Ohio--it totally benefits from having the freshest, local produce and meats virtually next door. restaurants in SoHo would kill to have this kinduv accessibility. besides, any restaurant that ships in coffee from Intelligentsia from Chicago and ice cream for Jeni's in Columbus obviously knows good taste. that said, my friends and i always go for brunch--good value at the price points, creative, seasonal menu, nice atmosphere with a ton of natural lighting, and fun to walk around Yellow Springs afterwards on a sunny afternoon. 5 stars because, well, this really is as good as it gets in the middle of Ohio.

Great service. Delicious organic salads. Figs with goat cheese and bacon, amazing. Fried artichoke dish, two thumbs up. Wine selection, extensive. Wait staff knowledgable about the wine. Eat outside, the deck is great. Coffee with lemon is good.

Here's the deal...it's one of my favorite restaurants in the COUNTRY. Yeah. I said it. Deal with it. I've been five or six times over the years and EVERY single time I've walked away thrilled. Fantastic service. Really unobtrusive yet involved. The owner is clearly a locavore and pretty much everything they serve there is from within 50 miles. Great bread, great almonds, great olives. Specific dishes that blew me away was a cheddar cheese soup that somehow was super refined and a lamb dish that was some of the best lamb I've ever had. I'm heading back in a few weeks and can't wait. I live in California and if this place was in LA or San Fran it would be huge. LOVE IT.

Good food, good staff. I like this place. A visit to Winds Cafe is always a treat. The menu changes seasonally and always contains unique dishes. The staff is thoughtful, so this place is good for people with allergies, too.

Usually I am not fussy about service, but I was SO disappointed and angry at the service we received at this place so I feel that I must comment on that. We had a reservation for 2 at 7 o'clock on Saturday. We were there right at 7 pm, and there was a couple waiting in front of us but no one was there to greet us. While we were waiting (no one had waited on us), other people are coming in, and a line was starting to form. Soon we realized that the man who was supposed to seat us was actually bussing tables in the back. People who came after us are going straight to him to catch his attention. Apparently this is the only way to be "checked in" here. Finally we figured that we had to do that to get a table, even though we had called in to make a reservation. All this time, other servers are walking right past us, but no one pays any attention to say "someone will be with you shortly" or any of that. We ended up waiting almost 20 minutes to be seated, but there was NO acknowledgment of the long wait. This is simply unconscionable. So our dinner started on a very bad note, and I was ready for poor service throughout the dinner, but our server was actually not bad. The food was OK but not great. We both ordered "duck you can eat with a spoon," but this was one of the most flagrantly misrepresented dishes I have ever eaten. I was expecting something like a cassoulet, but it was actually a duck leg on a bone. I love any meat on a bone, but come on, you cannot eat THAT with just a spoon! This duck was tasty but certainly not falling off the bone. The accompaniment was a white bean stew, which was not bad but too one-dimentional. I would have liked maybe some fresh herb as a garnish or something to provide a vareity fo texture and flavor. In sum, I was quite diappointed at this place. There is clearly a management issue. I see that a lot of people like this place, and there are not many high-end restaurants in Yellow Springs, so I get the impression that the owners can fill this place without trying very hard to offer decent service. But they need to better train the greeter or just get someone else to do the job. I was really offended by the service we received by the greeter.

great food, great service. our reservation was for 2:00 and, though very crowded, we were seated immediately. this is the second time we've visited Winds Cafe and is definitely a destination trip from columbus.

I hadn't been to Winds Cafe for a long time, but we took a trip to Yellow Springs yesterday and ate lunch here. It wasn't crowded and the service was good. I liked the look of all the offerings on the menu and everything was fairly priced. Even though the lunch menu doesn't offer a huge selection, the selections it does offer all look appealing - I also noticed that several of the selections were a good match for someone who was vegetarian, dairy-free, or gluten-free. The Salad Nicoise got a thumbs up, and I had the vegetable curry which was very good (with the exception of the rice it was served on which seemed dry and crumbly as though it was yesterday's leftover rice - no way was it freshly made or even made that day) The women's bathroom was also very poorly ventilated (and my son said the men's room was even worse). So I'll ding them a little for that and for the rice. Otherwise, definitely worth making this restaurant part of your visit to charming Yellow Springs.

That's a tough act to follow...I went to the Winds for the first time last year for my birthday, my fiance and I always let the other choose where they'd like to be wined and dined. My choice was the Winds in Yellow Springs. Yes, there are hippies there, yes, there is definitely some pretension that you have to deal with, but overall it's a decent place to hang out with fairly forward thinking people (and Dave Chappelle lives there, c'mon?!). ANYHOW, we showed up w/o reservations and were seated promptly, right after a strong Democratic showing in the polls, lots of corks popping that night to say the least. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable, and the breads they brought to the table were very good. The wine list was not too long and fairly approachable, and there are choices for everyone as far as price is concerned. Our food was very good, my fiance got the seared Tuna and I got the scallops (we're easy to please if you put either of those in front of us). It is not cheap, let's be fair, we only go for special occasions. It is however, a place that focuses on locally procured and organic foods, and I think that is very important. You pay for that to some extent, and I think that it's ok as long as it's understood. Overall a nice place with nice people, good food and a dedication to supporting local and organic farming. Solid. UPDATE - Went last night to celebrate fiance's graduation. Had two mojitos while waiting for a table, some of the best I've ever had (watch out El Meson). Once seated, our server was attentive and polite (no medieval accent that I could pick up), and the food was LOVELY. First Course - Slow Boat to Sicily Salad and Beet Terrine - salad was very good and they split it in half for us without asking. The Beet Terrine, layers of goat cheese and beets with beet and what looked to be an herb oil - both very good. Second Course - Pan fried striped bass with mashed taters and salad of green beans, lima beans, tomato and corn (served room temp). Very good, comfort food. HOWEVER, the fiance's dish of Seared Swordfish with melon, saffron rice and fresh basil/parsely was perhaps one of the best things I've ever put in my mouth. The flavors played off one another in a way that I won't soon forget, seriously outstanding (and to think we doubted this dish). Dessert - Two cups of very good decaf coffee and their signature chocolate mousse, a fitting way to end a fantastic meal. I've officially upgraded this to 5 stars. LOVELY!

Wow, this restaurant blows...literally. This restaurant is supposed to be Yellow Springs finest. My husband and I both agree that it is not what it is hyped to be, nor is their food worth the price that they charge. I suppose it is because most of the food on their menu is supposed to be organic. The restaurant aims for a quaint artsy fartsy atmosphere....after all..this is a college town...Antioch College to be exact...they're well known for their liberal arts programs, and also well known as a "hippie town": There's lots and lots of handmade crafts that decorate their walls, none of them match, have a theme or are impressive...country quilt art alongside tables inlaid with Spanish tiles. Eclectic maybe? The wait staff was accommodating but in a strange theatric pretentious way. I could not understand how an Ohio native could pick up a a medieval accent. He also wore a ponytail and beard, so I could not help but have flashbacks of Fleetwood Mac and Ren Faire. The actual menu selection is a one pager. You have 5 main entrees to choose from and their version of assorted tapas, salads, and the like. Entrees are pricey...they start at $22. If the portions were larger, or if the food tasted better, I wouldn't have considered them pricey. We took my mother-in-law and her new husband there for a belated Mother's Day dinner. Three of us opted for the Dover Sole, and my husband chose their lamb ragout, and we ordered a side of green beans for my son. The fish portion was tiny, bland and boring. It had a light wine sauce and a side of wild rice pilaf. The lamb was also uncreative, and my husband complained that he was still hungry afterwards. Our dinner cost a little over $200. Definitely not worth it. For Yellow Springs, I can see why it is a treat, the service was good, but in relation to taste and price I can't justify it.

Yellow Springs is waiting for their first tornado and I hope that the first building it takes away, will be the Winds - gone with the wind...that restaurant is owned by a egocentric woman who thinks that she can cook...she can't and you will taste it. The chefs can't do what they can, they have to do what she says and that's bad. Everything tastes bland. The fish you get is so old that it could have walked all the way from the sea - I know it, I worked there. The menu tells you about what she experienced 30 years ago and how good the dish tasted then - it doesn't anymore. 0 stars out of 5, 1 because there's the hope of a tornado. Juergen Wittek

I stopped by Winds Cafe with a friend after hiking at John Bryant State Park just a couple miles down the road. We arrived at the restaurant at 2pm-ish and had a 5-10 minute wait for a patio table. Not too bad a wait for a warm, sunny summer weekend. My friend and I split the Organic Sandwich Version II and Leo's Dilemma salad. The bread basket came with about 4 different kinds of bread (foccacia, sourdough, grain/seed, etc). It was a pleasant surprise to sample a bunch of different kinds of homemade bread before even getting our main entrees. Since we asked to share both dishes, Winds brought out half a veggie sandwich + chips + a side salad on separate plates for each of us (2 thumbs up for this) and then our large Leo's Dilemma salad on a single plate for us to share. The Organic Sandwich Version II came with white cheddar cheese, avocado spread, roasted marinated tomato, cucumber slaw, pickled red onion, sunflower sprouts, and sunflower seeds, all on top of some hearty seeded wheat bread. Definitely worth trying...it's rare to find such a flavorful vegetable sandwich! The Leo's Dilemma salad came with mixed greens, local Ohio green beans, pickled carrots, chunks of parmesan cheese, fried chick peas, homemade ricotta, and basil vinaigrette. The fried garbanzo beans had a very interesting texture--crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside. The homemade ricotta was creamy and lightly sweet, very similar to what you'd buy from the grocery store. Overall a good salad with a creative/good dressing, but nothing super unusual or out of the ordinary about it. I would definitely recommend going to Winds Cafe if you are in Yellow Springs. Nice atmosphere, offbeat/creative/gourmet dishes, and a great deal! We got 2 entrees for $9 each, which seems crazy cheap to me for a sit down restaurant.

Visiting from Columbus and stopped in for brunch. Mistake. We'd read the other yelp reviews and compared with trip advisor. Should've listened to the ticked off yelpers on this one. Food: Ok. I guess. We ordered shrimp and grits, home fries, and coffees. Shrimp and grits were bland. Better with salt and pepper and Tabasco. Would not recommend ordering them. Home fries were good- like most things cooked in a lot of butter. Coffee was also good. Service: What. The. Hell. Our waiter was slow as sh*t. He never refilled our waters even after moving them to the edge to be more noticeable. He refilled our coffees once and spilled it all over the table- which is fine- BUT he said he'd be right back to clean it up and never returned. A busser eventually came over and cleaned it up after about 5-10min. We got our bill and it had extra things we didn't order on it. Again, fine, but it shouldn't take forever to fix. I had to go up to the host station because once again our waiter disappeared. Atmosphere: sometimes being close to other diners is intimate and nice. Not here. I don't want a strangers crotch or ass next to my face when I'm trying to eat. Decor is local art which is cute. Menu is the definition of pretentious. I don't want to read a paragraph about your hike and inspiration before you can tell me what food is actually in the dish. Overall- hard pass.

This place was a lot of fun. Great bar and great bar tender, Dawn. She was very friendly and fairly attentive. We were going to sit outside on thej patio, but by the time the guy had a table ready for us, we were too intrigued by the bar to move. I'm a big bourbon fan and they had some real winners. In addition to my all time favorite, Blantons, there were probabably another 12-15 on the shelf. I can't even remember the name of what I had, but it was nothing I had before. My buddy is a bud light fan and couldn't pronounce any of the craft beers on the menu. Too bad for him, I would have been estatic, but was too preoccupied with the bourbon. He had a vodka tonik. Between the two of us we ordered 4 small plates: a cheese dip of sorts, grilled asparagus with hazelnuts, the most bizzarre shrimp cocktail you will ever see, and brisket tacos. Everything was very good, although the shrimp cocktail was odd. I can't even describe it. After my bourbon I had an Italian margaritta. So ya got tequilla, contreau, and mix, with some italian champaign on top to give it a fizz. The rimmer was a smoked habenro salt, which was crazy good. Olives and bread came before the meal and all was well. Lots of locals in the place, which tells you how good it is. Our meals were based on their recommendations and they did not disappoint. I'm mad at myself for not taking food pictures, but will make up for it the next time I'm there in 2 weeks.

Awesome food and drink served from an eclectic menu that changes with the season. My parents had loved this place for years when they introduced my wife and I to it. Now my wife and I are fans too! It is not just the food, we have been introduced to so many wines and beers while eating there that we also love! Don't forget to check out the wine shop next door!

Looks like a cute place with interesting menu but after waiting over 20mins and watching people who just walked in the door be seated before us, we left. There were 2 seats at the bar that were apparently open but the host didn't mention that. Horrible customer service. Too bad-wanted to try it. Walked across the street and grabbed bourbon chicken from the vendor at the gas station and it was delicious!

Showed up to this place on a Saturday evening. We were from out of town. It was very busy and most people appeared to have reservations. We did not and fortunately was seated very fast! The gentleman host was very upbeat and polite! The decor was very unique and partial walls / rooms in the dining area set a tone for intimate dining. He wait staff were great. The place was packed but you wouldn't know by how fast the service was. We shared 2 dishes. The figs, pigs, and goat and the cornmeal walleye. Both were absolutely delicious! I'm craving them again today! Servings are on the small side. The price is mid range to high for portion size. All in all this is a very nice place with delicious food! We are not big drinkers, however they also offer a wonderful wine selection! Thank you!

Worst service EVER!!! Literally sat at the bar and watched the bartender for over 12 minutes, without even a "hello" for bartender, who walked past us a dozen times engaged in his own conversations. Heard the food was good, so thought we would check it out...but service was soooooo bad that we left. Told the manager on the way out why we we were leaving and he shugged it off...anyone who goes here is a dupe; as they evidentially do not care about customers!!! Saw two others at the bar and another table frustrated too by poor service. The couple next to us was lucky enough to get the bartenders attention, but both things they tried to order were gone...they packed up an left too. Totally unbelievable experience and speaks so very poorly of the owners that I will NEVER go back!!! Don't waste you time and don't reward bad management.

Is the food good? I don't know, never had the opportunity to try the menu or the fancy brunchy drinks. They looked good! But first you have to get a server to acknowledge your existence. We sat at the bar to have lunch. Very cool, I love barstool eating. The bartender, a 20 something guy with longish blond hair, was working hard churning out the drinks. I waited to make eye contact, and waited, and waited. Was I the invisible woman? When he slowed to a trot and said hello I asked if he had time to take our order and he shrugged and I said really? And he replied..whatever. Look I have no beef (no pun intended) with Winds. Hear it's a great place to eat. Newsflash, ask your employees to Acknowledge new customers. Wave, smile, make eye contact, Something!!

I always enjoy the Winds Cafe but was slightly disappointed with our visit today. The food was good but the service not great. The hostess had a big job because of the Street Fair but it is not an excuse for being marginally rude. We will definitely give them a second chance because we have always liked The Winds but hope for a better experience next time

Winds just didn't impress us like we thought. Food was good, but not great. Service the same. Once in, we were oddly and abruptly asked if we could be helped. Like we walked in holding hat-wearing goats or something. Booked a birthday dinner through Open Table and it was never addressed. Sure, some restaurants don't recognize birthdays but it was still disappointing. Menu focuses heavily on tapas, or "small plates" in this case. Seems the specials feature a special small plate and also an entree. Insalata Caprese was fresh; Moroccan Grilled Duck Breast, yet perfectly cooked, was missing flavor in the overall dish; the Grilled Bistro Steak's smokey ragout was VERY smokey, which is your forewarning. Quality food but just wasn't great-missing the mark. The "spicy" chocolate cake was the best part-full of flavor and complexity. Could have had a birthday candle in it. COME ON! Oh, and we met Dave Chappelle at the bar. NAME DROP! (super nice guy.) All-in-all I need to try the place again, but not on a birthday. Not bitter, not bitter....

We are previous saints of this place. Last 2 experiences have been below stellar and not worth the trip. Many memorable meals there in past, but last two since Thanksgiving 2013 have been poor. Food is not amazing or made with love. Needs some life brought back into. Falling short of standard. Won't be back for a long long long time.

Went last night with my fiancée. I can't complain much about the service at all. We were seated almost immediately after arriving (5 minutes earlier than our reservation.) The waiter gave a decent wine recommendation based on my desire for duck. We ordered the pumpkin risotto for an appetizer. My fiancée ordered the steak and I the duck. We were offered some olives and bread presumably from the associated bakery and a small bowl of olives. The olives were fine, but the bread was utterly bland. It tasted as if they forgot the salt in the recipe. Little did I know at the time that this would be my first encounter with their crusade against proper seasoning. Then out came the risotto. It came out cold and again bland. Pretty disappointing. I looked for the salt shaker and all we had was a pepper mill, a specials menu and some table decoration. Our entrees came out in a decent amount of time. I cut into my duck only to find what was described as "duck you could eat with a spoon" to be way over cooked. Duck is supposed to be medium rare to rare, but came out on the dry side of well done. The green beans side was okay and the other beans that it came with were, again, unseasoned. My fiancée's steak came out a nice medium rare as ordered, but relatively unseasoned. Her mashed potatoes came out, surprisingly, well seasoned, but green beans were lacking. When I finally asked a waitress if they had salt shakers, she pointed to the table decoration and said she messed around with it the other day and figured out it was a salt shaker. After dinner, we ordered the meringue for desert. It consisted of a scoop of ice cream sandwiched between a bottom of meringue and a top of whipped cream. The first thing we noticed is that it is near impossible to eat the meringue without making a huge mess. Cutting with the spoon was very difficult as it was extremely hard and when placed in the mouth, was annoyingly chewy. The ice cream was good, but the whipped cream topping tasted as if sugar had been left out. It really left an offensive taste in the mouth. The butterscotch topping was fine. Overall, we were very disappointed with our meals, and for $50/person, I expected much better quality than what we received. A return visit is unlikely.

Ordered cheese plate as appetizer, wow they gave us 6 slivers of cheese, 1 fig and less than a teaspoon of some type of candided fruit. This was WAY OVERPRICED and not enough for one, leave alone two people. Wife had asparagus risotto, incredibly small portion with half piece of asparagus. Flat iron steak was ok but veggies with meal were nondescript and cool, not enough warm. Overall very poor meal, service lacking. We we were long term avid customers, no more, time to vote with our feet. Gonna go to Sunrise cafe up the street from now on.

This place used to be one of the premier places to eat in the area but unfortunately I think their quality has gone down a bit. The menu seems tired and pretentious. I'd rather go there for lunch; the lunch menu seems better to me. The meat entrees always turn out to be dry and overlooked whether it's duck or lamb or chicken. The butternut squash ravioli on their fall menu is delicious although I can't bring myself to go there just for that. Winds Cafe I used to love you but I think it's time for you to change - be more creative and imaginative! You guys are stuck in a rut.

In the past I've had some unique and delicious meals here but this Sunday's brunch was bland, overpriced and the service was poor. I got the Mingas that was highly recommended by my server and by the time it arrived it was cold. It looked like a pile of scrambled eggs with a scoop of sour cream and quac on top and needed some heavy Chalula sauce to give the eggs any flavor. Will prob check out a couple places down the street before coming here again.

What's the point in gushing over a meh review? My app was good but difficult to eat. The other diners were giving me dirty looks for resorting to my fingers because the knife wasn't cutting it (harhar). My main was poorly put together and not well thought out, although the vegetables were great. My partner's entree was actually brought to our table incomplete. We had to request the missing parts from the kitchen, and only one of the missing ingredients was provided. No apology from the server, either. My partner's opening salad was really amazing and the only thing about the meal we thought lived up to the hype. What else? Oh, my wine was poorly described and watery. No offer of replacement or swap after my initial sip, but other tables around me were given the same offer when they rejected the wine. Dessert was average. And getting our food took forever. There were three tables--all larger parties--seated after us, served before us, and ordering more. Our paltry little dinner for two was not a priority for the kitchen, and we felt pretty bad just sitting and sitting and sitting. The message I took from all of this is that we're young and don't look like the Yellow Springs artsy type so we got service that matched. Which, umm. I don't love being profiled that way. Things that were good? The aforementioned asparagus salad, the bread basket, and the bus boy/food runner. Wow, that is a paltry list for a $70 meal. Our server was absent at best, and it looked like all the servers on the floor were running around more than they should have. Is that how the Winds make a profit? By understaffing? Dunno. OH MAN, and the host! He was so cold I got frostbite on my nose. This was not the way I wanted to start or end my meal. He made us regret walking into the restaurant at all, but my partner really wanted to try Winds. I wish we'd gone to the pizza joint instead. Loud. Sloppy kitchen work. Bad staffing. Why did I drive to Yellow Springs for this? Accessibility notes: no Braille menu or signage. Does get loud at peak hours. Crowded for mobility devices. High bar.

Had a wonderful brunch on Sunday. The new menu lives up to the Winds hype, like my waiter did; I would highly recommend the Eggs Benedict. The patio had a bit of a wasp problem but that's not uncommon for Ohio.

Yellow Springs is truly a gem of a town, and Winds Cafe is one of its crown jewels. I found the menu, which I hear changes monthly, to be inventive and enticing. It was hard for me decide what to order, but I settled on the scallops. They were fresh and cooked perfectly. The dish came with a small amount of risotto (a very small amount, by the way) that was also delicious. I also had the tapas (good) and the chocolate cake (way good).

Asked for seating outside, was asked to wait a few minutes and then they sat us inside anyway. I repeated our request for sewing outside and was told it would be awhile longer (even though there were plenty of open tables). Food was "ok" but priced for excellence. Never got a refill on water, and service was extremely slow...I mean five minutes for an extra plate. Will not go back for brunch. Sunrise is way better!

As other users have said, one of the best restaurants in Ohio. One of the best I've been to anywhere, although I'm not a professional foodie by any means. I've never had a bad meal or service here. More importantly, I've had at least two dishes that I will no shit remember on my deathbed: 1.) early summer risotto with English peas, morel mushrooms and asparagus: Includes local and fresh produce, which is how Winds tries to roll. I've dragged multiple people to Yellow Springs just to eat this dish when it turns up on the menu, and they all have loved it. This is possibly the most heavenly dish I've ever encountered. Except for.... 2.) herb and artichoke frittata: A perfectly cooked frittatta with a warm liquid center bursting with slightly bitter artichokes and topped with marinated tomatoes and bread crumbs. I'm normally in YS during the daytime, so I've never been here for dinner. I know I've come in at lunchtime wearing yoga pants, a t shirt and flip flops and the staff doesn't blink at me. I've also frequently eaten here alone and feel comfortable. The menu always has more than one vegetarian option available. The only downside-and it's a minor one-is the soft drink selection is from an independent manufacturer. Which is fine, but it makes the pop insanely pricey. $3.75 apiece for a can of diet soda definitely makes me long for a bottomless fountain drink. This isn't really a restaurant for small children though (I've never seen any or a kid's menu.) You, gentle readers, no doubt have tastes more sophisticated than mine and could care less. Definitely worth a stop while you are in Yellow Springs. Some other must visit shopping locations: Asanda Imports, Sam and Eddie's Open Book, Dark Star Books, Superfly Comics and Games-a truly great comics store with a lovely staff-Starflower Natural Foods and Atomic Fox.

Once again, we traveled to Yellow Springs from Licking County in order to soak up the local vibe and have a delicious lunch at Winds. We were not disappointed... from the delicious hot and cold teas to our bison burger (imbued with a unique mixture of spices) and tuna nicoise. Our only complaint, however, is that Winds failed to provide any gluten free bread. There were gluten free meal choices, just a lack of consideration for the gluten free crowd.

Usually reasonable but recently has been terrible. It takes forever to get food and quality is no better than a cheap carry out. Would not recommend at all.

Great food and friendly service. Been going for many many years and stopped in twice in two days since my friend and I were in town for a quick one night ladies night. Brunch service was a little slow but delicious. We sat at the bar for both dinner and brunch and had the same bartender both times.

The Winds is a stand by favorite in wonderful Yellow Springs. When I worked in that town for a year I would get a lovely salad and soup several times a week. The restaurant itself has a nice vibe. We always enjoy good wine and cheese with the food. We don't go here that often as they only have one main veggie option usually. It can be over complicated for my tastes. But overall it is good and you should make time for a walk around the charming town before or after dinner.

What a disappointment! I came to Yellow Springs for a girls shopping day and had a great day. Until it was time for lunch. Winds is so popular and well known, we assumed it was good. You know what they say about making an a$$ out of you and me. Winds was terrible. In a town known for its acceptanceof alternative lifestyles, I expected to find vegan entrees. Instead I ordered the sausage and white wine pasta special without the sausage. I received a TINY portion of linguini drowning in canned tomato sauce. So disappointment. Bread was included with my entree and I eyed it with the hope of it satisfying my hunger. Unfortunately it was stale. Five of us sat taring at the bread basket longing for it to satisfy our hunger from a long morning of shopping. Next time, I'll eat at the cajun tent in the BP parking lot across the street.

Stopped for brunch after riding bikes from Xenia. Took over 30 minutes to get drinks and 40 minutes for food. When it came, my wife's poached eggs were hard and the hash browns were cold. She sent I back and we shared my entree. Disappointing and neglectful service and food. We were looking forward to this respite based on hat we had heard about the restaurant, this unfortunately will be our one and only visit. I have received an email from the General Manager with a very nice apology and explanation and an offer for a complimentary meal. We may return to give them a second chance based on their apology, however, if we do we will pay for our meal, I did not write the review for any other reason than to bring the issues to management. I feel they have professionally responded and may deserve another chance, stay tuned.

I always love Winds Cafe. They use fresh local and do a great job. Good value as well. Highly recommended.

For this Northern Californian on a quick trip, landing in a small village in the middle of Ohio, I did not expect to find its version of Hippieville USA. But alas as we strolled down the sidewalk in the brisk fall air, that's what it felt like. Walking the streets of this small community, I felt like I was in Healdsberg, CA - "Where old rich hippies go to die" - with it's local stores, indie shops, dreadlocked White kids and great organic eateries. Winds Cafe was everything that I expected as we entered: a repurposed old house, lots of funky dishes and friendly service. I had the fish sandwich and it was excellent. The rest of the menu would satisfy any foodie gastric yearnings. Would definitely visit there again. BONUS: Yes, there is actually a Dunfy Realty Office in the town. Awesome. Been hearing about the Winds for years, and finally got around to trying it. I gotta say Yellow Springs is in the middle of nowhere! We had to take an unmarked detour because a pole was down in the road. Had about 10 miles of Gypsy saying "take the first available U-Turn and go back" You've been there....right? Well - this was so deep in the woods I could hear the banjo from Deliverance playing. We managed to arrive at our destination safely. It was Fathers Day and the tables were full so we managed to grab a couple seats at the bar. Checking the stock, I was pleased to see only good vodkas. Color me happy! Had that Mimosa I've been craving with good champaign and fresh squeezed OJ. Life is good. I had the Croque Monsieur on sour dough bread, Emmental and Gruyere, bechamel and paper thin ham. Soooo delicious. Dining campanion had flat iron steak cooked to perfection and Spanish fries (warm thinly fried potato chips) They made my eyes rool back. Portions were just the right size to satisfy our cravings and not leave us in a food coma. Two drinks and two entrees - $40. Not bad at all for this quality. This was so worth our drive thru the woods. I'd even do it again!!

After all the hype and reviews. My wife and I thought we were going to have the greatest meal ever on our first visit. It was probably the worst meal we have ever had. My wife ordered the soft shell crab and barely found two bites of crab. I had the walleye (it didn't even taste like walleye, not sure what it was) and was highly disappointed. If there was salad dressing on our salads, we sure didn't taste any. I don't mind spending a few bucks to have a meal that you say " Oh my God, this is delicious" We found nothing that was to die for. We won't be back.

Excellent food. A bit pricey but not for the type of food and the service. I have never been to a better restaurant in Ohio. I have been to many better outside of Ohio, but like they say in real estate: location, location, location. Undeserving of the bad reviews it has received on this sight for the most part.

As a non native to this country, I find it my duty to venture out and see what is outside the box. Last Sunday(10/21/2012) I ventured to Yelllowsprings, OH. Why you might ask, I ask why not!? What I found was funny little town, populated by what seemed to be almost hippi-ish residents. With lots of craft/artists shops, tied-eye t-shirts and fair trade items for sale! But I was there for a late Brunch, so enough with the side tracking, here we go. The winds cafe. First impression: this place is busy and packed, must be good, so many people can't be wrong. There was a small line when I got there, and people where making new reservations for the following weekend when they left, so my hopes were up. Also there were some awards on the wall, for best choice of sorts. I got the last table in the middle of the room, which is oddly enough divided by a sort of window wall, hard to explain... I ordered the Route 68 breakfast. Which was trout sautéed crispy, drizzled with lemon cream. Fresh tomato some sort of spinach leaves. With home fries, scrambled eggs and a biscuit. I also ordered a freshly squished grapefruit juice. This meal was AWESOME, I could have licked the plate. Everything was fresh and tasty, besides from a few fish bones in the fillet, this was as good as it gets in my book. Even the juice was stellar, 100% freshly squished and not from a container that read freshly squished(as some restaurants tend to serve). Service was fast and friendly, even though they were busy. Yes, it is a long drive just to have brunch, but it was worth it and this is actually a cool little village...! On a side note I can recommend the Young's dairy farm, just down the road. Who does not like good ice cream and you get to see the cow it possibly came from...

Not what we expected. Our waiter, JD, made comments that were a bit "immature", such as tasting flights of wine was a "game" he made up and that he loves to be in photos, etc. He just didn't take our dining or drinks very seriously, too loud & even bawdy. And, he had too many other tables to give anyone good service. My steak was cut up for me, which was odd, especially for the price. The bread basket and the chocolate dessert were the best parts. The soup was abysmal. The host was very nice.

I had been told by several friends to try Winds Cafe for its food and service. I can't comment on the food because I never got past the service. We arrived at an odd time--it was 3 o'clock so there was only the bar menu between the lunch and dinner menu. We were happy to try it, considering many restaurants in Yellow Springs are closed at this hour. I walked in with my husband and 1 year old daughter. The manager, who was at the front desk, barely greeted us with the bar menu. We were happy to accept and sit at the patio but were very much ignored while we stood there trying to get his attention. I tried to tell him that we would like to sit outside but were ignored and stood for over five minutes waiting for him to acknowledge our presence. When we were acknowledged, he seated us at the most uncomfortable table on the mostly empty patio, sitting right in front of the swinging doors. We moved to a better table but ended up leaving before we could be served because the poor attitude of the manager left such a bad taste in our mouths. The actual server was very sweet and we tried to make it clear that it was not her fault but that of her manager that we left before we could order. I can't speak to the food, but I can say that I was very disappointed by the manager's service. I don't know if he didn't want a young child there or he is always an ass but I was very disappointed given the glowing reviews I've been given. BAD SERVICE.

Very tasty and creative menu. Perfect Autumn Salad and great tapas. Plenty of choices for vegetarians and the option of nice outdoor seating.

I can see a restaurant like The Winds Cafe shunning the title of Best Burger in Dayton Metro but that is exactly what I just ate. Previously Tank's in Dayton held the title for me and while they are very different burgers and probably serve different clientele, The Winds Cafe holds the top spot for me. Now, The Winds Cafe isn't a burger joint. There is only one burger on the menu called the Beaune Burger. It comes with fries on the burger but I opted for them on the side as I have eaten at Primanti Brothers in Pittsburgh many times and fries on my sandwiches is overrated. The burger was ordered at a temperature of medium-rare and each bite melted in my mouth. I knew at first bite that my decision to order the burger over the pasta special was the right choice. If you love gourmet burgers, don't miss the opportunity to try the Beaune Burger.

The food here is well prepared using fresh ingredients and unique preparation. The food has its own style where even what appears to be a common ingrediant gets a twist. It is very enjoyable to experience the flavor combinations the chef comes up with. You may see menu items you are familiar with but you will not taste food like this anywhere but here.

Best meal I've had in a long time! Today we rode our bikes from downtown Dayton to Yellow Springs and decided to eat at The Winds... what a good choice it was! I knew the menu offered a lot of local and organic options and I am always willing to pay more money for good food! Choosing what to order was agonizing because everything on the menu sounded amazing. I ended up ordering crepes which were stuffed with lemon marscapone cheese, raspberries, black berries and blueberries. My husband ordered the bison burger. The other two we were with ordered the bison burger and an egg and bacon sandwich and salad. We sat at the bar, and the bartender/server/barista was AMAZING. She was super entertaining, fun and personable. We absolutely loved her. She made great conversation with us and answered all of our questions. When the food arrived everyone was stoked. Everything looked SO good. The crepes were fantastic and had that perfect fresh, light eggy taste. The lemon marscapone was AMAZING ( I could have eaten a bowl of it...) and the berries tasted so fresh and wonderful. It's rare for me to finish everything on my plate, but I ate every last bite! Though I didn't get to try the burgers, I was told they were amazing. I tried the fries and they could well have been the best fries I've ever had. They were lightly tossed in what appeared to be rosemary and wilted oregano and a touch of garlic. They were slightly limp, which I usually don't appreciate in a french fry, but for some reason they were just so good. I couldn't stop stealing them off of his plate! I assume my other friend's food was good because his plate was just as clean as mine when he was done with it. I was also super happy when I read in the menu that I probably wouldn't be able to find a beverage on their menu with high fructose corn syrup. Woo fight the power! haha... no, but really, this place was right up my alley, as I try to eat and drink as much local and organic as I can. They served a variety of Santa Cruz organic juices as well as fresh squeezed orange juice and lemonade. I ordered the lemonade. The boys had coffee and Virgil's root beer. Everyone was really happy with the meal. I can't wait to go back!!!

My husband made reservations here for a Sunday brunch to celebrate our anniversary. We were seated promptly. Husband got the open faced Croque Monsieur sandwich and I ordered the summer fruit crepes with a side of bacon. He really liked the salad dressing with the greens and the sandwich. We both liked the fries. In face, I do have to agree that these french fries are some of the best I've ever tasted. Blueberries and raspberries were in the crepes. They were sweet and filling. I was a clean plater. The bacon was nice. His sandwich was $12. The crepes were $11 and the side of bacon was $3. Our waiter was generous with the water refills and wasn't obtrusive when clearing plates. We will definitely be making another trip for dinner sometime.

In terms of figs, pigs, goats and fish, our dinner was very well prepared. The goat milk ice cream was a delicious find (although not prepared by The Winds). The service was intermittently good. It took a while to have plates cleared and glasses refilled. Never would have expected to find this type of food in Yellow Springs, Ohio, for sure! Be sure to make a reservation, things fill up quickly there even during the week. Loved the artwork.

Really good, fresh, flavorful food and a decent wine list! Don't miss it if you have time. Can get a little crowded on weekends.
